Wacken Open Air – The Greatest Metal Festival in the World

Wacken Open Air, the biggest metal music festival in the world, will take place between 4-7th of August, in Germany. The town is situated 50 km from Hamburg, and visitors can go to the festival by car. You can go as well by Metal Travel Bus from Hamburg, but with a prior booking. Access in the metal festival area is allowed on 4th of August, at 0.00 and the other zones belonging to Wacken Open Air Festival will open on Wednesday, at 8 o’clock, 10 and 11 (Headbanger’s Ballroom). Teenagers under 16 will not be allowed to come alone to the concert and the ones who are 18 must leave the area before midnight.

Underaged must have a parent agreement with them, where an adult takes the responsability for them. The greatest Metal Music Festival in the World, Wacken Open Air, is at its 21st edition and it will entertain its 70.000 fans with famous artists like Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Slayer, Arch Enemy, Amorphis, Anvil, Candlemass, Cannibal Corpse, Corvus Corax, Immortal, Kamelot, Lake of Tears, Nightmare, OverKill, Soulfly, Stratovarius, Tarja, Tyr, U.D.O., W.A.S.P. and many others. Taking into account that tickets for the festival were sold 200 days before the event and there will be many music enthusiasts, there are also many security restrictions, such as – knives or any sharp items, screwers, glass objects.

If you want to buy something to drink, then you can get yourself a beer or any alcoholic drink from there.You can use showers for 2,50 euro. Just next to the showers, there are towels available. There will be 8 supermarkets selling sandwiches, plastic knives and forks, the festival beer, Wacken Beer. The ticket price includes also the so-called Full Metal Bag, that contains, among others: headphones, pen, raincoat and a condom. But who wants to get one, has to hurry up because there is a limited number.

The access with recording cameras is strictly forbidden, as well as with bracelets that have more than 1,5 cm pricks. The ones that want to test their vocal skills can go to the Karaoke area, which is open during night, too, after the concerts from Headbangers-Ballroom. The Wacken Open Air Rock Music Festival had its first edition in 1990, with just few music bands performing.

Love Parade Tragedy in Germany, 24 July 2010

Love Parade 2010 was marked by a horrible tragedy in Duisburg, Germany – 21 victims were killed on the 24th of July, during the a crush in a tunnel during the musical event and more than 500 people were injured. Because of the unexpected high number of participants, a crush was made outside an access tunnel. A 25-year-old woman died from injuries suffered four days earlier in the stampede at the Love Parade on Saturday, when hordes of young people pushed through a tunnel into the techno festival area at a former freight rail yard in Duisburg. More precisely, the victims suffered from chest contusion, after having been crushed. The head of the Rhineland Lutheran church assembly, said in his opening sermon, that ‘The Love Parade was danced to death’.

The ceremony gathered hundreds of people on a stadium in Duisburg to watch the live transmission of a memorial service for the victims of Love Parade 2010. On the following days after the tragical event that took place in Duisburg, Germany, many people lit candles, left notes and placed flowers at the site of the tragedy. More than 550 seats were reserved for those attending the ceremony at the Salvatorkirche, the city’s main protestant church. Many lined up to sign a condolence book placed between two red candles in the middle of the tunnel. In the afternoon, a few hundred mourners marched from the city’s train station to the direction of the tunnel. They were holding white balloons, but were not allowed to enter the tunnel, which had been blocked by police out of security concerns.

The victims were commemorated one week later, on 31st of July, where high officials of Germany, including Angela Merkel attended the ceremony. The mayor, Adolf Sauerland, did not attend the ceremony because of the anger citizens had against, who also sent him death threats and who is held responsible for everything that happened there. An investigation was started in order to find out who was to blame for this unfortunate event. It is highly claimed that one entrace venue for an expected crowd of over 1 million was a completely wrong choice.
