Taj Mahal in India – One of the Seven Wonders of the World

Once the capital of the Mogul Empire (between the 16th and 18th centuries), Agra is one hour and a half distance by the express train from New Delhi. Tourists from all around the world do not visit this area only for the ruins of the fortress built by this empire, but also to see the Taj Mahal with their own eyes. It is the most famous monument in India, a magnificent temple that reminds the world about the opulent civilization of a country that was slowly swallowed by industrialization. Taj Mahal is indeed the most well preserved tomb-monument in the world. The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1631 and lasted 22 years. It is said that 20.000 people were sent to work here. Materials were brought from the entire India and other areas in Asia, with the help of a ‘fleet’ that counted 1000 elephants. Later, Taj Mahal became the ‘symbol of the eternal love’. The building is situated on a white marble terrace which emphasises the huge dome and the four minarets. The whole building hosts an extraordinary garden with fountains. The complex also contains, besides the palace itself, two other mosques, built in the same unmistakeble style. The empress’ tomb is placed inside the dome. The only asymetrical object inside the dome is the emperor’s tomb, that was built next to the queen’s, a few year later.

The monument of eternal love hides many places for the visitors. for instance, the rectangular basis of the building is a symbol itself. The main gate is like a veil Indian women wear during wedding night. The famous images of Taj Mahal don’t correspond fully to the legend or the poems. When the sun rises, the building is pink, and in the evening it is white-yellow. The changing of the colours is said to be the symbol of women’s mood. The emperor intended to build on the other side of the river a retort of the monument out of black marble and a bridge. Unfortunately for him and for posterity, that could have had the opportunity to see a unique monument, everything sumed up to an imposing plan. The emperor died before seeing his dream come true.
