Published by Laura at 8:12 am under Special

Hamburg is the second city in Germany with 1 640 000 inhabitants and one of the most important harbours in Europe. Due to its trade tradition, Hamburg is considered ‘the gate to the rest of the world’.There are very many shopping and entertainment areas in Hamburg. Around the main railway station, there is one area for shopaholics. For educational tourism, visitors have to go to the harbour, where they can spend time in the Hamburg Dungeon, a place of the ‘dark side’ of Hamburg during history. Hamburg is also a city with a Red Light District, just like the one in Amsterdam. The street is called Reeperbahn and it is situated in Saint Pauli district. One can find here a wide range of girls and boys, toys, and shops with certain items strictly connected to this area. It the ‘love center’ of the town, known also as ‘mile of sin’ crowded with brothels and erotic shows.

The name of the district is not famous only because of FC St. Pauli. Nowadays, not everybody agrees with its ‘nickname’. Many who live here consider it an artistic center. Here, besides the curious tourists, striptease shows and sex-shops, a real alternative culture was developed. It is a mixture of diverse influences, trends and styles. More and more young people with new ideas discover the “Kiez” and the neighbouring “Schanzenviertel” as a place of pulsing scene life. At St. Pauli you findeverything: commerce and erotic, kebab shops and Asia snacks, yuppie bars and punk discos, old-established inhabitants and Turkish families, trendy people and dropouts, the football club “FC St. Pauli” and the Hafenstrasse (Harbour Street). A quarter with some problems on the one hand, but very vivid on the other hand. Find “Grosse Freiheit” (great freedom) in the quarter St. Pauli – not only as a street name.
