Dune Du Pyla (The Dune Of Pyla)

The western part of the Aquitaine region can be subdivided into two areas, such as a plain called “Les Landes de Gascogne” (the sandy moor of Gascony) with many continental dunes, parabolic ones and sand ridges and an area of coastal dunes, which is 8km wide and 230km long from the Gironde (Pointe de Grave) to Biarritz in the South, which were later covered by the pin forest.

In that area, the coastal dunes include: 1 dune above 100m height, the Great Dune of Pyla (or Pilat), 47 dunes between 70 and 100m in height, 350 dunes between 50 and 70m in height, 710 dunes between 30 and 50m in height, 410 dunes between 10 and 30 in height.

The Dune du Pyla, the greatest sand dune in Europe, is located at 60Km from Bordeaux, in the South of the Arcachon Bay, on the “La Teste de Buch” district (Gironde). The dune was formed after the XVIIIth century and at the end of the XIXth century, by the accumulation of Aeolian sands on a transverse dune. The slope of the East side is between 30 and 40°, and the slope of the West side between 5° and 20°. It is made of very fine sand which the siliceous grains have about the same size.

It has reached a height of 107m, a length of 3km and a width of 500m. Its volume is of 60,000,000m³. The altitude of the summit is not settled, because it fluctuates between 70m and 107m, moving inland, into the Pine Forest, that is about 3m to 4.3m into the forest and about twenty private properties. Moreover, this movement covers each year 8000m2 of forest. A road in the North East of the dune was overlapped in 1987 after an avalanche of sand, and buried in 1991. From the top, one will be delighted to watch the extraordinary ocean coast, the inlet of the Bay, the extended pin forest and the the Pyrenees Range. The ones enjoying delta planes will find Dune du Pyla perfect. Unfortunately, if the dune continues moving at the same speed as it used to, the Biscarrosse road and the camping located at the foot of the slope will be buried under the sands.
