A Visit at Madam Tussauds in London

Madam Tussauds is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world. Its museums are widely spread in places like Vienna, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hollywood, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, London, New York, Shanghai and Washington DC. Madam Tussauds in London hosts around 400 lifesize wax models of artists, politicians, sportsmen, monarchs. Madam Tussauds was born in Strasbourg in 1761 and then after inheriting a wax musem, she moved to London where she set up an exhibition of 35 wax figures on Baker Street. After her death, her relatives moved the display to where it is now, that is on Marylebone Road.

Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister, was voted out by the public, that is he is the first politician not to reside at Tussauds in more than 150 years. 6,333 voters took part in the poll: 16,2% voted in favor and 83,8% voted against him to be hosted by the museum. Andy Warhol, a very important artist of the 20th century, displayed celebrities like Liza Minnelli, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis or Marilyn Monroe. Of course, the Spirit of London could not be forgotten. There are a lot of wax figures there, in continuous transformation and ‘on the move’. For example the 13th wax figure of Michael Jackson has been recently displayed to Madam Tussauds in London. At the end of your visit in the museum you will also have the opportunity to see the Chamber of Horrors, in order to see some torture instruments along history. Moreover, a thrilling experience is wainting for you inside Madam Tussauds Museum in London. This is called Scream, connected to Chamber of Horrors. There is a very suggestive warn above the entrance which says: “Abandon all hope All ye who enter here!” Visitors will be desperate to escape from a high security prison where the inmates – live actors – are running wild. The guidelines are: it is not suitable for children under 12 years of age, it is not suitable for people with high blood pressure, or heart conditions, beware loud noises and strobe lighting and do no touch the actors as they will not touch you (although they give you this real sensation).

Some interesting facts about this museum are that for just one wax figure it can take the team more than 800 hours of attentive photographing, measuring, moulding, painting and sculpting, all celebrities’ vital statistics remain top secret, the duration of working on a wax figure can take up to four month. The cost of one model is £150,000. The largest figure is The Hulk, Marvel comic book hero. He stands 15ft tall and 8ft wide. His green fingers are thicker than a grown man’s arm! For the current 400 wax models collection, there were used 2,400 lbs of ‘Japan’ wax, a special wax which does not melt. Since its opening, 500 million visitors came to Madam Tussauds.
